Thinking Reading
THINKING READING
Thinking Reading is a bespoke 1-2-1 intervention for students who are 3 years or more below their expected reading age. The intervention is a literacy decoding intervention that aims to close the gaps between their reading age and chronological age.
Aims of Thinking Reading:
- To develop de-coding, word reading accuracy and phonetic awareness skills
- To improve students’ comprehension of texts
- To improve students’ spelling
- To develop students’ reading fluency
- To eradicate adolescent illiteracy so that no student leaves school unable to read well.
How students are identified for Thinking Reading:
How Thinking Reading works at Meden:
Students are granularly tested before being identified for Thinking Reading Intervention. All students will complete an initial NGRT which generates students reading age. If a student is identified as being below their expected reading age, they will then complete a second NGRT. If the student makes no improvement or is still shown as below reading age, they will then have 1-2-1 testing with a trained teacher on de-coding and comprehension. Again, if the student is still showing they are 3+ years below reading age they will be enrolled onto the Thinking Reading Program.
Once enrolled, the student will attend a diagnostic assessment where the teacher will assess the students:
Word Reading Accuracy
Sound-Spellings
Fluency
This will create starting points for the teacher to plan their 1-2-1 weekly lessons.
The lessons are split into two halves. The first half of the lesson focuses on mastering de-coding and fluency skills and the second half is the reading of the text, comprehension and writing skills as shown below:
PART A:
- Accuracy (Spellings)

- Homework set if needed
PART B:
