KS3
In Food Preparation and Nutrition, we want our pupils to have a passion for the subject and to be able to prepare and create a variety of foods with independence, dedication and determination. The department has two spacious, bright and well-equipped food rooms for the delivery of all food lessons, plus access to a separate computer room for theory.
All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have food and nutrition lessons three times a week for up to 6 weeks on rotation, giving them the opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of food related skills.
All pupils are given the chance to cook at least once a week and are expected to bring ingredients from home unless parental contact is made via the student planner prior to the lesson.
We value parental and carer cooperation and as such, we are mindful to set recipes which are easy to shop for, cost effective and appeal to a wide range of tastes. The recipe set for any given week by the class teacher can always be adapted or swapped to accommodate personal preferences, religious or specific dietary needs. Food is part of the rich and diverse curriculum at Meden School, we want our students to take part, roll up their sleeves, and get involved in the various sounds, smells and tastes that the test kitchen has to offer. We do not expect our students to be Master Chefs on day one, rather they build up a range of repeatable skills over time, slowly building their confidence as they progress.
By the end of KS3 at Meden School, we want to develop and challenge our food students to become wise shoppers, aware of cost and seasonal produce, knowledgeable in basic nutrients to promote healthy and sensible food choices now and in the future and to be competent, hygienic and safe when using a wide range of tools and equipment in the kitchen – which all adds up to a recipe for success!
