NewsletterSummer Newsletter 2023

~ July 2023 ~

It has been an amazing academic year at Meden School; students have worked incredibly hard and achieved so much.  Reading through the stories in our newsletter is a wonderful reminder of some of the amazing things that happen at Meden School on a weekly basis.

The end of the academic year is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the successes of our students and recognise the hard work they have consistently achieved. The Meden Celebration Evening we hold every year enables us to celebrate students who have shown excellent Attitude to Learning throughout the year. It was a great evening, full of both celebration and reflection with so many remarkable individual student successes. It was a privilege to be joined by guest speaker, Mark Crossley, who entertained and inspired us all with recounts of his career and how he came to be such a remarkable goalkeeper.

Meden Prom is the highlight of every year for our year 11 students and staff. It was amazing to see our Y11 students dressed to impress, and arriving in style at Thoresby Hall. Students enjoyed every minute of the evening and were able to let their hair down and celebrate the end of exams with their friends. How amazing they all looked! Their conduct was impeccable, and they did themselves proud on such a wonderful occasion. We wish them all the best for the future and look forward to seeing many of them return to Meden College this September.

As our Year 11 students leave us, we prepare for the arrival of two hundred new students in Year 7 and it was great to meet them during our transition days and to welcome them into the Meden Community. They were incredibly enthusiastic during all activities and lessons and demonstrated an excellent Attitude to Learning. We cannot wait to see them all in September in their new uniform and to hear about their summer adventures.

The end of term signifies the end of an era for the members of staff who leave us to enjoy retirement or to go on to pastures new. This year, we  sadly say goodbye to the following members of staff:

  • Miss Vine  (Head of Science) ,
  • Miss Carr (Spanish Teacher) and
  •  Mr Duffy (Teaching Assistant).

We are truly grateful for all for their hard work and contributions to the community at Meden School and wish them every success and happiness for the future.

Being oversubscribed yet again this September , we have also had to expand our staff team at Meden School, and we are looking forward to welcoming the following staff to the Meden Community in September:

  • Mr Morton (Deputy Headteacher),
  • Mr Fern-Swallow (Head Geography),
  • Mr Grisewood (Social Science Teacher),
  • Miss  Tindall (Maths teacher and Deputy SENCO),
  • Mr Land (English Teacher),
  • Mr Mrs Promosso-Migliore (Head of Drama) and
  •  Miss Mascareno Vera (Spanish Teacher ).

Finally, it is important  to appreciate our Meden students, of whom we are extremely proud. They have continued to conduct themselves with determination, understanding, and respect. Their unwavering dedication to working hard and being kind cannot be overstated. Working together to support our students is so important and I would like to thank each and every member of our school community for their continued commitment and support of our school.

I wish you all a lovely summer break and I hope you are able to spend some quality time with loved ones.

I look forward to seeing everyone back at school in September for another fantastic year at Meden School.

Best wishes

Mr Smith

Our Year 11 students celebrated their Prom at The Riding Hall in Thoresby Park this year and what a night it turned out to be.

As as the tradition at Meden School, students gathered on the Carrs in Warsop for some initial photographs before heading of to the venue in the chosen mode of transport.

Every year we see many different types of vehicles chosen by students to get to the Prom and this year was no different.

Many different cars...

a motorbike...

a tractor!

even a helicopter!!!

Students and Staff danced the night away in all their glamour, sharing fond memories of their time as pupils at Meden School.

Kacey Buczko and Thomas Wilson were crowned prom king and queen.

A Massive thank you to Miss Wild who oranised the evening and who managed to hold it together right up until the very last minute.

Good luck Year 11s. We will see some of you in September when you enrol at Meden College. Whatever your next steps, we sincerely wish you all the very best!

We held our annual Celebrations Evening on Wednesday 28th June, inviting students in Years 7-10 who had been nominated for an award by their teachers.

On arrival our guests were greeted by our amazing Meden musicians who performed some outstanding pieces that helped to set the atmosphere for the evening.

We transformed the main hall in to a formal setting and welcomed our guest speak Mark Crossley to talk to our audience who wowed the audience with his recounts of his experiences as a goalkeeper, playing for Nottingham Forest and other high profile clubs,

Awards were presented in each subject by the head of department, Mr Smith and our guest speaker who invited student to come and collect their trophey. A main winner for each subject was also awarded. Students then received pastoral awards by their Head of Year.

Mrs Brett chose to present our Governor Award, which went to Mae K who was recognised for an outstanding attitude toward learning, a commitment to her studies, and an unwavering determination to make a difference within our school and community.

The Headteachers Award was presented to Tommy A and was chosen by Mr Smith who said this to Tommy about his award. " Tommy, today we recognize your extraordinary achievements. Your positive attitude and resilience have left an indelible mark on our school community. You have shown us that success is not just about academic prowess, but about character, determination, and the will to never give up. Your story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact one individual can make."

Well done to all our award winners!

Here are a fe pics of the award winners

Some of Meden School's talented artist were fortunate to be able to take part in an Art Workshop,  run by artist Nikki Parmenter.

Nikki is a Cheshire based artist who specialises in mixed media, textile based pieces, and takes her inspiration from a variety of sources. She is particularly  interested in the way in which ancient societies created a series of visual  symbols to represent the things which were important to them and she likes to investigate  myth and legend and draw parallels between societies, showing that although  many people have different beliefs we are all united by visual iconography.

During the workshop, Nikki worked with our students to make plastic entrapment pieces using the free draw stitching on the sewing machines. Many of our students made links to their current Sea Life project looking at sea creatures and plastic in our oceans and others took inspiration from the pieces Nikki bought in to show them.

All students loved the process and really enjoyed the day but there were 3 students that really shone and stood out to me for their enthusiasm, their talent on the sewing machines and for supporting others. They were Brandon N, Tyler J and Dominic W.

Well done to all those who took part and especially to Brandon, Tyler and Dominic.

During the last half term, students completed the Equation targeted 8-week programme to build resilience and self-esteem.  The groups looked at relationships & mental health, working with local artist Anna, to produce some amazing artwork to summarise what they’ve learned.

Some comments from the team:

Finally, just to reiterate again how fantastic all of the students were throughout our sessions. The boys today showed real respect for one another as they worked together as a team, and the artwork they produced reflects that wonderfully. The girls worked kindly to support one another and the honesty they all brought to each session. We work with a lot of young people, and those we worked with at Meden are truly inspirational I must say.

Massive well done to all the students who took part in the problem.

This year has seen the introduction to Meden students of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards which has been offered initially to Year 9 and Y12 students.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a flexible programme of cultural and adventurous activities for all young people, founded in the United Kingdom in 1956 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh at that time. The award is a personal challenge that empowers young people to develop valuable skills, overcome obstacles and build confidence and resilience.

There are four sections to complete at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold. They involve helping the community/environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning, training for and completing an expedition and, for Gold only, working with a team on a residential activity. Any young person can do their DofE – regardless of ability, gender, background or location. Achieving an Award isn’t a competition or about being first. It’s all about setting personal challenges and pushing personal boundaries.

Students in Year 9 have been working really hard towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh  Award, part of which was their first expedition. Students were tasked with  planning, training and then completing  an unaccompanied, self-reliant expedition (though staff were not far away in case of a real emergency)

On Saturday 8th July the DofE groups set off equipped with their maps and navigational skills, food and water and all the equipment they needed. Using skills taught during their DofE sessions each week, students were given several navigational checkpoints with timescales in which they had to reach them.

The weather was the worst; heavy rain and thunderstorms but it didn't dampen their spirits.

Camping overnight in Walesby forest, the teams of students were able to relax and dry off before continuing their adventure the next day to get to the final checkpoint.

Students were amazing and considering the horrendous weather, they did an amazing job, achieving their end goals.

Returning to their parents absolutely exhausted, all of the participating students were able to put their newly found skills to the test and learned a lot about themselves.

Later in the year the Year 12 students will be partaking in their own expedition in the Peak District as part of their Silver award.

Well done to all involved. We already have lots of interest for next year from students wanting to complete their Bronze award. Please get in touch with our DofE Leader, Miss Woodfield lwoodfield@medenschool.co.uk for more information.

We are thrilled to be once again oversubscribed for September 2023 and expecting another 200 students to our roll. On Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th July, we were joined in school by our cohort of Year 7 students, joining us in September 2023.

During the 2 day period, students followed a full timetable of different lessons including Maths, English, Science, DT & Humanities, which they attended in their tutorial groups. Students were really engaged in the sessions and were given rewards  for good work, using the Golden tickets we give to our students as part of our recognition for excellent ATL. At the end of the 2 days students were presented with certificates for all their hard work in a special rewards assembly.

Transition is a key time of year and is really important to help students settle in better once they start at Meden and it helps reduce their anxiety over the summer period. The students also have the opportunity to get to know some of the teachers and their tutor and is the perfect opportunity for them to make friends and get to know their peers.

It was a very positive couple of days and students who attended really benefited from the experience. We look forward to welcoming the children and their families to our Meden School Community.

Not a week goes by that we aren't able to celebrate the sports achievements of our students at Meden School. Here is a round up of some of the sporting events this half term.

Y8 Boys Football

The following students attended a football fixture afterschool on Wednesday 24th May at the Dukeries Academy

  • Dante B
  • Charlie S
  • Ewan G
  • Rio B
  • Rhylee B
  • Riley L
  • Wayne B
  • Hoson T
  • Leighton R
  • Nathan Y
  • Callum H
  • Jude S

After only one game this school year, which resulted in a 6-1 loss, the boys were very nervous travelling on the bus to play the Dukeries Academy. Nerves worsened upon arrival to the school when  students noticed an opposition player, stating "he is unreal and will dribble through our whole side! We are going to lose 10-0 here, Sir".

After a Matthew Hamer inspirational team talk, the game started!

The game was played in great spirit by both teams and after 45 minutes- the game finished 0-0- with the team very proud of themselves

Meden School Sports Day

Well done to everyone who played their part whether competing in a race or cheering for your team!

Every half term it gives me great pleasure to report on the events organised by the student body, to raise money for worthwhile charities.

This half term effort have been focused on raising additional fund for the Lashes Foundation, with an 'Evie Day' during the last week of term.

As well as the traditional bake sale, student council leaders arrange additional events that included

  • Football  - can you beat staff to get the highest number of keepie-uppies?
  • Guess the number of sweets in the jar
  • Guess the doggy's name
  • a Lashes merchandise stall

As usually we received donations from parents and staff for the bake sale which is greatly appreciated. Student Council members worked incredibly hard and raised over £500 on the day.  Annie Wilson, an English Teacher at Meden School gave us this message of thanks

'On behalf of myself, my family and the Lashes Foundation Team I would just like to give the biggest thank you to each and every person who has supported Lashes. As a team, Meden has raised a whopping £1474.70 this year alone for Lashes and that money is going to make a remarkable difference to the community. Forever will we be grateful and I feel so thankful to work with such an incredible bunch of people!
